LEED Certification & Sustainable Aluminium Systems
Understand how high-performance aluminium windows, doors and façades — supported by verified technical and environmental documentation — can contribute to the sustainability strategy of a LEED-certified building.
A global framework for high-performance buildings.
LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is one of the world's most widely recognised green building rating systems.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides a structured framework for evaluating sustainable strategies across the design, construction and operation of buildings.
Projects must meet required prerequisites and then earn points through selected credits. The total score determines the final certification level.
LEED certifies projects — not aluminium products.
LEED does not certify, endorse or approve individual windows, doors, façade systems or manufacturers. There is therefore no “LEED-certified aluminium window”. Construction products may instead provide technical, environmental and lifecycle information that helps the complete building project satisfy relevant LEED criteria.
Sustainability focused on measurable building impact.
LEED v5 strengthens the connection between building certification and real-world outcomes. The rating system is organised around three major areas of impact that influence credits and prerequisites throughout the framework.
Decarbonization
Reducing emissions associated with building operation, embodied materials, refrigerants and transportation across the project lifecycle.
Quality of Life
Improving health, wellbeing, resilience, equity and the overall experience of building occupants and surrounding communities.
Ecological Conservation & Restoration
Limiting environmental degradation while supporting responsible resource use and healthier ecosystems.
Where aluminium systems can support LEED objectives.
No individual window can guarantee LEED points. The contribution depends on the complete building design, the selected rating system, the applicable credit requirements and the project's overall material strategy.
Thermal Performance
Thermally insulated aluminium systems, appropriate glazing and carefully designed building-envelope interfaces can help reduce heating and cooling demand.
Daylight & Views
Large glazed areas and carefully positioned openings can support access to natural daylight and visual connection with the exterior.
Thermal & Acoustic Comfort
Window, façade and glazing performance can influence internal surface temperatures, air leakage, acoustics and overall occupant comfort.
Lifecycle Information
Environmental Product Declarations and lifecycle data help project teams quantify and compare environmental impacts during material selection.
Durable Components
Long service life, replaceable components and appropriate maintenance can support whole-life building performance.
Aluminium Recovery
Aluminium can remain a valuable secondary material when building components are correctly dismantled, separated and returned to appropriate recycling streams.
High-performance windows affect more than one calculation.
Windows and façades form a critical part of the thermal envelope. Their performance should therefore be evaluated together with glazing, shading, orientation, airtightness and the surrounding construction.
Transparent environmental data supports better decisions.
Environmental Product Declarations provide quantified lifecycle information for construction products and product families.
This information can support architects, sustainability consultants and project teams when analysing material impacts and embodied carbon within the complete building.
Reynaers Aluminium publishes EPD documentation for various aluminium systems and continues to expand environmental and product information available to project teams.
Technical data for sustainable building specification.
High-performance building certification depends on reliable information. Reynaers Aluminium provides technical and environmental documentation for many of its window, door, sliding and façade systems.
Available documentation varies by product family, configuration and market, so the exact requirements should be established early with the project's architect, consultant and LEED team.
LEED requirements evolve over time.
Earlier Reynaers documentation for LEED v4 illustrated how combinations of aluminium systems and other building components could potentially support multiple LEED credits. The current LEED v5 framework has evolved substantially, particularly around decarbonization, embodied carbon, resilience and quality of life. For this reason, fixed claims about a specific number of LEED points should always be verified against the rating system used by the individual project.
LEED targets should influence system selection early.
The most effective approach is to integrate building-envelope performance and material documentation into the project before final aluminium systems and glazing are specified.
Define the LEED Strategy
Establish the rating system, version, target level and relevant credits with the project sustainability team.
Evaluate the Envelope
Determine thermal, glazing, daylight, shading, acoustic and façade-performance requirements.
Select & Document
Select suitable aluminium systems and compile available technical and environmental documentation.
LEED Team Verification
Credit eligibility and final points are determined through the project's complete LEED documentation and GBCI review process.

For commercial, office, hospitality and international projects, our role is to help translate architectural and performance requirements into a technically appropriate aluminium solution.
LEED & aluminium systems.
Can an aluminium window be LEED certified?
No. LEED certifies buildings, spaces and other eligible projects rather than individual construction products. Aluminium systems can provide information that supports a project's overall LEED strategy.
Can Reynaers systems help a project earn LEED points?
Depending on the project, aluminium systems may support strategies related to energy performance, daylight, occupant comfort, lifecycle information and materials. Final credit eligibility is determined at project level.
Does using an EPD automatically earn a LEED point?
No. An EPD supplies verified environmental information. LEED credits normally contain wider project-level requirements, quantities, thresholds and documentation conditions that must also be satisfied.
What are the LEED certification levels?
The four levels are Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Projects generally require at least 40 verified points to achieve LEED certification.
Is LEED v5 different from LEED v4?
Yes. LEED v5 places stronger emphasis on decarbonization, embodied carbon, quality of life, resilience and ecological conservation. Projects should follow the requirements of the specific LEED version under which they are registered.
When should aluminium requirements be discussed?
Ideally during the design phase, before final system and glazing selection. Early coordination makes it easier to align building-envelope performance and documentation with the project's LEED objectives.
